UPPER HUT POSSE ‘E Tu’

Written by on May 30, 2017

This weeks LOCAL EYES takes it way back to 1988 with a slice of NZ Hip Hop history. Upper Hutt Posse’s  ‘E Tu’ pays homage to the rebel Māori warrior chiefs of Aotearoa’s colonial history, Hone Heke, Te Kooti, and Te Rauparaha.

‘E Tu’ was the first ever rap release in New Zealand blending African American culture with a uniquely Maori frame of reference paving the way for Kiwi artists looking to add an indigenous flavour to their music.
