TŪTAHI (Stand as One) ‘Get Up Stand Up’
Written by Admin on August 25, 2014
Get Up Stand Up is a nonpartisan project aimed at inspiring those disengaged with politics to stand as one (Tūtahi) and vote. The stakes have never been higher. By voting you can make our collective voices heard and keep our democracy strong.
New Zealand’s general election takes place on September 20 but anyone can vote at advance polling booths from September 3.
The voice of the younger generation is lost. 42% of 18-24 year olds didn’t vote in the last election. If this trend continues, then within a few years participation in our democracy will reach catastrophically low levels. Let’s flip the script and get young people to turn out in record numbers.
Get up, stand up and be the change you wish to see in New Zealand!
Bob Marley’s influence on our nation cannot be underestimated. His one and only concert in New Zealand, at Auckland’s Western Springs in April 1979, left a lasting mark on a country still striving to define its cultural identity. Bob inspired a feeling of hope in New Zealand that still resonates to this day.
After the Marley Family Trust blessed us with recording confirmation on Friday the 1st of August, by the following Wednesday (Jamaican Independence Day) we had 22 amazing NZ artists collaborating on this inspiring project. “Get Up, Stand Up” was the last song Bob Marley ever performed on stage, on September 23, 1980 at the Stanley Theater, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Let’s keep his voice alive by getting up, standing up and making a positive change for generations to come.
