THE BEAT GENERATION: 10th Anniversary Collection

Written by on May 8, 2011

The Beat Generation series on the BBE label are some of the best hip hop albums of the last 10 years. The label’s enormously liberal approach was the antithesis of stiff major record label A&R practices, their forward thinking rewarded handsomely by a truly diverse set of albums from some of the world’s most capable hip-hop architects. Madlib, DJ Spinna, Pete Rock, Jay Dee, Marley Marl, Will.i.am, Jazzy Jeff & King Britt all served up quality releases.

For the 10th Anniversary collection, Mr Thing & DJ Spinna compiled and mixed a few highlights over 2 CDs. A superb hip hop document!

DISC 1: Mixed by Dj Spinna – A humbling example of what it takes to truly succeed within the framework of multiple fields: a steadfast work ethic, an obsessively extensive vinyl library and the willingness to pursue the full extents of his roots (funk, soul and jazz), foundation (hip-hop) and future (electronic / dance music) with no restraints.

DISC 2: Mixed by Mr Thing – this supreme disc jockey first started DJing in 1987. The first hip-hop record he bought was “Streetsounds Crucial Electro”, first import 12″ was BDP “Poetry”, first actual record was Adam & The Ants “Kings Of The Wild Frontier”. From these humble beginnings Mr Thing went on to become one the world’s finest DJs and producers.
