Red Bull are on the hunt for NZ’s next best lyricist

Written by on May 14, 2020

The search has begun for New Zealand’s best new lyricist with the launch of the #RedBullNextNZ competition. Ian Beatmaster Wright had a chat to Smokeygotbeatz and got the low down.

Entrants* must download a beat produced by Smokeygotbeatz and record themselves rapping over the top. They then have to upload the video to Instagram where the top five entries will be picked by

Smokey and Church (Church & AP). Entries close at 11:59pm 31st May 2020.

The ultimate winner will be chosen by the public and they will win the opportunity to record a full version of the track with Smokeygotbeatz and Church at the Red Bull Studios in Auckland.

Having produced for the likes of Jay Rock from Top Dawg Entertainment and as the in-house producer for SWIDT, Smokeygotbeatz has already solidified his place amongst New Zealand hip-hop royalty.

Like many, Smokey says the pandemic has delayed the release of a number of tracks he has recently been working on.
“There was supposed to be a bunch of records coming out that I had produced but Covid 19 has pushed a lot of dates back. They’ll be dropping soon, hopefully” says Smokey.

*T&Cs apply. 18+. NZ Only. Entries close 11:59pm 31st May 2020.
