What started your passion for djing / selecting / collecting? I graduated from Elam School of Fine arts in 2017. I’m a multimedia artist, working in video, sound, photography, painting and creative writing. I was the drummer in the band Hospital Sports and appeared on the first self-titled album and following EP. Since then have created two soundtracks; one for a puppet show by Tom Tuke called “Paloma and the Do of Death” and another for an art project with drag artist Jimmy Nola. All these different things inform each other, and collecting special music is now also a part of my art practice. I had the urge to hoard CD’s from a young age, mostly rock music. I was always interested in knowing what different artists sounded like, and filing that away, even if they weren’t my thing. Growing up, my parents were playing Simply Red, Sade, The Eurythmics and Herbie Hancock. My older brother Alex was into drum and bass, so I first saw how fun mixing could be through him. Although, the main thing that got me into DJing was going to parties, dancing all night and learning what I enjoyed. I bought a pair of ancient CDJ1000s off Trade Me a few years ago and went from there! Do you have experience in the radio world? If yes, when, where and what? None! I love listening to radio though, I think it’s such an awesome medium. It’s comforting that it’s always there, and you never know who might be listening. Do you have any regular gigs or residencies where people can check you out? If yes, when and where? I play live gigs as they come up and I promote them on my Instagram page @Pinot__v

He uri ahau no Tauranga Moana Ko Mauao te maunga Ko Te Awanuiārangi Moana Ko Ngāi Tuwhiwhia rāua ko Ngāti Tapu ngā hapū Ko Ngai Te Rangi me Ngāti Ranginui ngā iwi Ko Opureora rāua ko Waikari ngā marae Ko Dena Moana Jacob ahau Tihei Mauri Ora I grew up in the Mount. I had a bro that hosted and DJ’d the underage nightclub. Hed let me carry his records and do BMPs on each record.Sad guy! Said I could DJ if I knew how to set them up and plug em in! Music made me feel good – a song for every teenage emotion haha I grew up w all the rap lords adorning my room Public Enemy, Ice Cube, Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg etc. My parents would jam ZZ Top,AC/DC, Jimi Hendrix through to Kenny Dale, Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton- talk about musical diversity. I was given music by my sister and the haumis’ – fresh back from the states they were bumping all sorts of goodness off the back of the first Upper Hutt Posse tours! Too Short, Ice T, Buju Banton, Barrington Levy, Dianna Ross, Stevie. The lists are long! What started your passion for djing / selecting / collecting? My Ego haha. Thinking I was better than everyone else! Also my big sister and love of fashion. Do you have experience in the radio world? If yes, when, where and what? Yes, Base FM and KFM and Wellington student radio MUNT FM. Do you have any regular gigs or residencies where people can check you out? If yes, when, and where? No – but I need one! I don’t even charge that much 😛 What music are you mostly drawn to? And is this different to what your sets consist of? I’m beat driven – I will play what feels good to me – I’m a wairua DJ. Influences wide ranging. Known to play gangster rap, hip hop, dancehall, and reggae w splashes of dnb, soul, funk, and dance. Mash up a dem! Do you have any history with Base? If yes, what is your history? My Partner at the creation of Base FM hosted the breakfast show. They were award winning in that show time. There is a photo of him and our eldest daughter on the Base wall ( she looks 2yrs old in the pic – she’s 19yrs old now!) I was the Base FM “It’s yours” campaign poster girl because the marketing girl at the time was awesome! Haha! I also hosted Suga drive Mondays 4-6pm w Jillski. What is your show name and what does it mean? Te Pō w Phaze (name gifted by my big sister and vote endorsed by the Instagram fans) Te Pō – The Perpetual Night From the empty void comes the night and the realm of Te Pō – the perpetual night. Te Pō long solitary periods are flooded in shades of darkness: Te Pō (the dark night); Te Pō-nui (the great night); Te Pō-roa (the long night); Te Pō-uriuri (the deep night); Te Pō-tangotango (the intensely dark night). These are the names of a place where no light exists. However, within this darkness come moments of movement – the conscious stirring of being, the beginnings of a change towards the realm of becoming. Te Pō explores the dimensions of night, shadow and form that exist in the darkness of Te Pō. Te Pō explores concepts about states of being and ideas about a transformation which is starting to take place. Within the final state of Te Pō-tahuri-mai-ki-taiao (the night of turning towards the revealed world) we start to see the restless movements of life begin. -Nigel Borell The many Phazes of Phaze Do you have any social media accounts you'd like connected to your show profile? Since the late 90’s Murry Sweetpants has immersed himself in music in some form or another. Quite by chance a career On Air came about from being a prize pig on the then independent radio station GeorgeFM. After getting a taste for radio volunteering for many years on the infamous early morning “Short Black” pre-breakfast show before Peter Urlich, He spent the next 8 or so years lurking about with intent before crossing the street in 2010 to hold down ‘the Long Black’ on Radio Ponsonby until the stations closure in April 2014.

Founded back in 2006 the Chin Check started with a bunch of guys (An Englishman, a Samoan, a Māori and a Scotsman) coming together for beats, beers and laughs. Since then, the Chin Check has had many different bro’s holding it down but after a little bit of a hiatus one of the originals, Mr Brown (the Scotsman) is bringing it back to continue the flavour that has made the Chin Check a must for all true Base heads. Over the years you would have heard Mr Brown (Off the Record Radio) being a true hip hop head but now he is just as comfortable dropping anything from future bass, dub, rock and everything in between. Aside from the beers and beats, tune in on the first Wednesday of every month for a bit of banter with your man Mr Brown (and guests) and you may come across some cheeky snippets of chat and good vibes. & The Drop with WAM With super deep crates and an eclectic taste, WAM will be bringing top shelf musical selections.

Where are you from and did your hometown influence your music taste? Originally from South Auckland & a small coastal village Orere Point. Living a Town & country life definitely had an influence on my music along the way. What started your passion for djing / selecting / collecting? Back in the day I spent a lot of my time wagging class up town at True Tone records & other Music shops listening to records, this was back when you could stand at a booth & listen to albums prior to purchasing…… One album in particular that got my attention was Soane’s Tongan chic, I was like: Hey this guys Tongan to?, we can be friends. It wasn’t long before I ended up playing along side Soane & managed to cut some deals plugging my gigs on George fm. After pinching mates hard drives time to time I soon built up some decent musical assets Do you have experience in the radio world? If yes, when, where and what? I jumped on with Radio Ponsonby for a while until it died. It was with my RP family that I started the Helium Radio Show on Sunday evenings Do you have any regular gigs or residencies where people can check you out? If yes, when and where? Not currently, My past residencies were Sand Bar Waiheke Is. , Reef Bar Mission Bay & Murpheys in Drury What music are you mostly drawn to? And is this different to what your sets consist of? Most of residencies in the past consisted of different crowds day in day out so I became accustomed to a mix of different genres, with Hiphop & RNB being my grass roots although I crossed over into the House scene for a while there, There’s nothing worse then listening to some guy play the same thing all night….. I liked to be the man of mystery with a few surprises haha Do you have any history with Base? If yes, what is your history? Im new here What is your show name and what does it mean? Helium Radio Show ….. Helium ……we on air & its not a downer Any additional information you would like us to know? I like turtles
