Featured Base DJ – Lock Steady
Written by Admin on September 18, 2012
This week our featured DJ is the young Negus Tafari, better known around here as DJ Lock Steady and bringing you fresh rhythms every Thursday on Riddim Culture.
Lock Steady is the son of another one of our original longstanding DJs and true reggae and Rastafari representative, Sgt Benji. Negus practically grew up here at Base FM. As a kid, he used to tag along with his dad to the station but before long he was spinning records here and now he’s opening up for major international acts. Brought up in a Rastafarian family, Lock Steady has been surrounded by roots, dancehall, bashment and all kinds of reggae for his whole life.
Lock Steady traveled to Jamaica with his dad when he was just 5 years old and while there was exposed to Sound Systems, Kingston studios and every record distributor in town.
Lock Steady is now a key member of the Base FM fam, regularly plays with several local sound systems, and has had two of his refixes pressed onto vinyl. He’s just finishing up his Audio Engineering studies at MAINZ so he’s almost ready to take over this city.
This weekend DJ Lock Steady is doing a live set with the one and only Jah Red Lion up at Rakinos for Base FM Radiowaves – Rewind. It’s got one of the best Radiowaves line ups yet – DJ Heart Official and Israel Starr (Wgtn), Dub Terminator and Ras Stone, The Mooch, Sgt Benji and Piet and Deli (Sandy Bay Social Club). It’ll be a great chance to catch the upcomer in action at one of the biggest parties of the month.
You can find Lock Steady on Facebook, follow him on Twitter, listen to his mixes on Soundcloud and of course catch him here every Thursday at midday for Riddim Culture.
