For this year’s annual celebration of the life and music of  James Dewitt Yancey aka J Dilla, Leonard Charles aka Jeremy Toy recorded the ultimate tribute to the producer.

Tucked inside a small basement studio here in Auckland, Leonard Charles and his friends re-recorded the all 31-tracks off Dilla classic DONUTS on live instruments. Charles gives a funky reinterpretation of the tracks on live bass, drums, Hohnor clavinet, Fender Rhodes and Roland synths, but sans any sampling of the original source nor sourced material.

The album features vocals by Ruby Walsh, Anji Toy and very special guest Georgia Anne Muldrow on the emotional tribute ‘Airworks (Forever)’ which we immediately chose as our Base FM local tune of the week.

Leonard Charles “Basement Donuts” will be released in two Volumes…Sides A & B are fifteen tracks running over 23-minutes in length available now for digital download exclusively on the HIT+RUN Bandcamp page.

Turn It Up is a feature on Base FM where we showcase a new track from Aotearoa every week. Tune in weekdays at 10am and 4pm to hear this weeks top local pick.
