HYAN ‘J For J’

Written by on January 16, 2017

Over the last few years we’ve seen the rise of a new breed of local producers who push a fresh production sound. No longer focusing on the tradition of boom-bap beats as a platform for MCs to rhyme over, what we’re hearing now are different creations altogether: heavy bass combined with intricate drum programming to be appreciated as stand-alone instrumentals.

Slo:Wave is a local label which provides a platform for many of these emerging beatmakers. With a few club nights already under their belt, the Slo;Wave collective were asked to curate a line up for The Rhythm and Vines Cellar Stage for New Years Eve, which in turn led to the labels first compilation.

The compilation includes tracks by Wayvee, Stuss, Omni Potent & Tommy II, Hyan, T1R, Rory Noble, LMC & Tony Douglas, 2047, Nekolye and Yancey. This week on Base FM we’ve decided to feature “J For J”  by Hyan, as it’s one of the first times we’ve heard a local producer successfully combine elements of dub with this new school production sound.

Check it out the compilation here: The Rhythm & Vines x Slo:Wave – Cellar Stage Compilation.
