Written by on May 13, 2013

As you may have noticed, things have been crazy off the hook round here lately with the new Digital Liberation movement. As a result, the Base DJ Feature – a favourite with you lovely Base website lurkers has been missing for the last weeks. But this week it is back! And there could be no better way than to kick if off than with this highly entertaining Q&A with Danny2Chains, until recently holding down the Close Encounters show but now manning the brand new Full Metal Racket along with AZBO and Dave Seeker. Read below for learn about DTC’s background as a DJ, a surprising a reveal involving Australian Bull Riders as well as the DJ’s dream and nightmare gigs…

When and how did you get into DJing?

I first got on the decks in about 1999 when I was working at Tardis in Queenstown, the bar wouldn’t fill up until about 1am and I needed something to do while I waited for the place to get going. I played my bosses records at the time before I started buying my own. The first records I bought where from Downtown Brown. That guy is another reason why I wanted to DJ, he’s one of the best and hands down one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met.

When did you start DJing at Base?

I started just under 4 years ago when I was living with Zeb Beall. He had his Close Encounters show on the late shift on a Wednesday. I would walk up with him and he’d let me play a few tunes until he finally let me be his co-host. Good bugger.

How do you listen to Base FM?

I use the Tunein app when not close to a Freeview TV. The best way to listen to Base is to be in the studio but we aren’t all fortunate enough to do that.

What do you do for fun/work?

I’m a Graphic Designer by trade. For fun I try to get down the mountain as much as I can and have full intention to start skating again (hasn’t really happened yet but the thought is there). Plus I work on my clothing label Genius Smalls

The last record you brought that would surprise listeners?

Justin Timberlake’s Justified. Now that is one good pop album.

What song got you out of bed this morning?

Check My Resume, Substantial Prod. By Oddisee. Straight up banger!!

Favorite DJ?

Oh you can’t just name one – Dylan C, Dan Paine, Chef D, Sandy Bay Social Club, DJ Locksteady….. Too many to name.
All Base DJ’s kill it.

Favorite show on Base?

Friday Night Takeout and The Freshness are the ones I listen to the most, but I can turn Base on at any time and get my head nodding.

First record I ever bought?

This one’s easy, The Specials 7inch of Ghost Town with Friday Night, Saturday Morning on the B-side.

Guilty Pleasure?

Pre eighties English comedies. Only Fools and Horses is the best.

What’s your proudest achievement?

Actually saving enough money to go traveling in 2001. Changed my life and introduced me to Dancehall.

What track do you open with to revive a dying dancefloor?

Anything from the golden era of Hip Hop. Wu-Tang, Biggie, Native Tongues and the likes. Everyone knows the words to Juicy.

What’s your fail safe cure for the winter blues?

I don’t get the winter blues. I can go snowboarding and I get to wear all my winter jackets.

What would you save in a house fire?

Family and friends first and foremost, but if they were out getting a curry it’d have to be my laptop.

Worst Dj job you’ve ever had?

I played at a Xmas party for a major Hotel group a few years back. I had never heard of Justin Beiber back then and didn’t have anything by Pitbull. It was hell, I almost walked out.

Dream venue or party to play at?

I’d love to play next year’s version of the Rum Shack at Splore. I’m easy to please.

Something most people don’t know about you?

I’m a Bull rider’s son from a small town in rural Queensland Australia. But before you start, I’m now a proud Kiwi.

Favorite Bar?

Tardis and Subculture (R.I.P), Queenstown.

Top 3 Concerts of all time?

1. Stevie Wonder  2.Yellowman 3.Guru and Jazzmataz (with an impromptu freestyle with KRS-1).

And lastly, a few shout outs from Danny :

Biggest thanks to Jazz and Dyl, none of us would be able to do any of this without those two, much love! Big Ups the entire Base fam, I have made friends for life in that place. Zeb, I would have never got the opportunity to do this without you homie, thanks for everything (even the occasional nagging). Had my back since day dot and pushed me to become a better DJ, Close Encounters 4 life. My new co-hosts, Dave Seeka and Azbo, we got this on lock, forward ever. All our regular crew that comes up and hang with us on Fridays, Ducky,T-dot, Grassroots, Ed G, Karl, Vicky, Minnie, The Peacocks fam and the other assorted scallywags that I have dragged up in the past 4 years.
Last but most definitely far from least, the Base listeners, we do this for you!
