Featured Base DJ – Addison Chase

Written by on February 26, 2013

Addison, from Tuesday afternoon’s Beat Poetics show with Ben Jamin, has been very busy working on beat maker compilations and getting ready to launch a clothing label. This weekend you can catch him playing at the High Noon Pool Party as W1se1.

What song got you out of bed this morning?
Treehouse – Dream Koala

When and how did you get into DJing?
I initially got interested in DJing when I was 11 or 12 as a few of my older sister’s friends were DJs at the time and I’d occasionally get the chance to mess around on their turntables. It was round then that I decided it was something I wanted to get into but it probably wasn’t until I was 16 or 17 and I bought my first record [which i believe was ‘Mercenary’ by Herbaliser] that I got hooked. A few months after purchasing my first record I crashed my car into a lampost and decided that instead of using the insurance money to buy a new car I’d buy some Technic 1200s. Looking back it was probably one of the best choices I’ve ever made.

Favourite show on Base?
Lo Key : Low Maintenance

Top 3 concerts of all time?
It’s a tough choice but i’d have to say McCoy Tyner with Jose James [Melbourne Jazz Festival], Rock Steady Crew Anniversary [NYC 2011] and Outside In Festival [Sydney 2012] were my favourites /the most memorable.

What do you do for fun when you’re not DJing?
I mess round making beats, blog stuff that inspires me, work on releases for a mini record label I’m working on [Cosmic Compositions], and designing clothing for a new label I’m starting with my girl Jordan called ‘Thelonious’ which we’ll hopefully be launching next week!

What releases are you currently working on?
We’re about to drop our second compilation in the Avant Garde/Free Jazz Series ‘A Tribute to Alice Coltrane’ which is pretty much a compilation of beat makers from round the world strictly sampling Alice Coltrane to create something original as we’ve always thought beat makers are like the modern day free jazz artists [experimenting and improvising to create something new and different].
I’m also working on a few other series of EPs including a ‘Messenger’ series which is pretty much just a collaboration between an up and coming MC who we feel has potential and a collection of our favorite beat makers. We’re also going to be doing a series of solo EPs called ‘The Organic Music Society’ of beatmakers who strictly sample the sounds of the earth/nature/themselves etc.  I hope to one day get these releases pressed on vinyl and to also work on getting more local music pressed on wax too.

Favourite festival in NZ?
Splore… Without a doubt..

Dream venue or party to DJ at?
Would love to play at Splore or Low End Theory [LA]

Favourite DJ?
Local : Lo Key or Manuel Bundy

International : Joe Kay
