On Saturday the 18th of June, Young, Gifted & Broke (YGB), and friends consolidate for another huge Red Bull Sound Select event, this time at Auckland’s historical Kings Arms venue. Headlined by legendary New Zealand live hip-hop/soul band Opensouls, the event will also feature performances from Red Bull Sound Select regulars Raiza Biza, Team Dynamite,Third3ye, and a Sound Select debut from Eno X Dirty.
Best known for their run in the mid-2000s, Opensouls set a new standard for live hip-hop in New Zealand. They laid the foundations for the success of live acts such as Homebrew, @Peace, and their peers. At their peak a sprawling ten-piece with roots in classic jazz, 90s/2000s underground rap, soul, and funk, Opensouls served as the launch pad for Red Bull Music Academy graduates Julien Dyne, Jeremy Toy (She’s So Rad/Leonard Charles) and Isaac Aesili (Sorceress). Since then, many of the members have become recognised figures within the international beats/soul underground. Seeing Opensouls revisit the songs from their two classic albums, Kaledioscope (2006) and Standing in the Rain (2009) will be a reminder of a vital era that served as inspiration for many of New Zealand’s current reigning talents.
Also on the day you can peep an outdoor half-pipe game of ‘S-K-A-T-E’ from the Arcade skate team and late afternoon YG’BBQ served by the acts themselves (or something like that.)
Heres some words from YGB’s Tom Scott:-
We wanted to take it back to The Kings Arms cause we got a lot of good memories that were made in that place. It always feels more like a house party than a night club. There’s just more space for something to happen there. We got Opensouls back together somehow for this one. We got all the YGB homies. We got the arcade dudes with the skate ramp. A BBQ. Sh*t. Gotta be better than staying home. And it’s $3.
Also a reminder that RSVP confirmation does not guarantee you entry, but does qualify you for a $3 ticket. Entry is first come first served up to capacity so make sure you get there early to insure entry.
