After the huge success of their June Red Bull Sound Select at Auckland’s historic Kings Arms venue, Young, Gifted and Broke (YGB) and friends are back at it, and this time, they’re taking the party to the storied Galatos complex on Friday the 21st of October. Headlined by SILICON and his new live band, the event will feature performances from
Team Dynamite, Groeni, a Sound Select debut from Bailey Wiley, and an after-party in the Galatos basement with DJ Frank Booker.

“I feel like when there is nowhere to move but the dance floor or the bar, gigs can start to feel like an intermediate social.” Explains YGB curator Tom Scott.  “I like gigs where there is plenty to do. The Galatos Basement just gives the night a bit more longevity, and that was the aim for this one.”

SILICON
is the solo project of New Zealand Hawaiian multi-instrumentalist and producer Kody Nielson. Also known for co-founding The Mint Chicks and his co-production work on his brother Ruban Nielson aka Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s acclaimed Multi-Love album, Personal Computer, Kody’s debut SILICON album, was the winner of the 2016 Taite Music Prize. Since its release in 2015 via Weird World Record Co, SILICON’s vibrant synth-funk meditation on life and love in the time of holograms has won him acclaim from Dummy, Stereogum, Indieshuffle, Fader and The Guardian, and seen him perform across New Zealand, Australia, and the UK.

As one of the most exciting emerging voices in the country, Bailey Wiley’s Sound Select debut will be an opportunity for attendees to check out her distinctive beats and trap-informed re-imaginings of 90s neo-soul and RnB as a sound for the 2010s. Since the release of IXL EP in 2014, Bailey has spent time recording and performing across New Zealand and Berlin, sharing stages and studios with the likes of Onra, Noah Slee, Raiza Biza, Mr. Carmack, Laughton Kora, Swaren Veygal and Ben Esser along the way. With her new EP S.O.M.M out now, a live session for The Grow Room streaming online and a recent nationwide tour with Fly My Pretties on her resume, she’s in top form right now.

“Looking forward to my first Red Bull Sound Select show. This collective is pure fire and the line-up is tight AF,” says Bailey Wiley. “We might even play some unreleased tracks to celebrate!”

“It’s an honor to have Bailey onboard,” Tom Scott enthuses. “I love what she does. Bailey ain’t the type to hide nothing. Soon as you meet her, you know who she is, and that’s the same as when you hear her live. She makes you want to listen.”

On top of SILICON and Bailey Wiley, the rest of the live entertainment for the night will be rounded out by Sound Select regulars Team Dynamite and Groeni. With Haz Beats having just returned from a trip to London, and a Pacific Music Award for Best Pacific Music Video under their belts, Team Dynamite will be auditioning material from their forthcoming new album on the night. Fresh off the back of a series of well-received performances in Australia and the international release of their Hewn EP through Wondercore Island (Hiatus Kaioyte, Oscar Key Sung), Groeni will be testing out new material recorded for their forthcoming debut album.

“I think this gig is gonna meet all the needs for YGB fans,” says Tom Scott. “To me, the lineup is nuts. SILICON, Team Dynamite, Groeni, Bailey Wiley. It’s rare you get to see those acts on the same bill. We had the chance to bring over some overseas dudes but to me, SILICON was the one. He’s the dude. Plus he never plays, but when he does, it’s wild. You already know.”
