In 2009, Californian producer and DJ Nosaj Thing was one of the most celebrated young names in Los Angeles’ thriving beats scene. Low-End Theory impresario Daddy Kev’s Alpha Pup Records had just released his debut album, and on both sides of the Atlantic, the bleeding-edge future music cognoscenti were celebrating his singular vision. It was, as journeyman music journalist Jeff Weiss described it for Resident Advisor at the time.
“Brighter than the harsh black and whites of dubstep. Clearer than Flying Lotus’ blurry radio transmissions. Diaphanous enough to disappear at the first array of earnest adjectives and purple prose.” – Jeff Weiss
In the nine years that followed, he’s released three more loved albums through Innovative Leisure and Timetable Records and produced for new era rap superheroes like Kendrick Lamar, Kid Cudi, and Chance The Rapper, all while building an audience worldwide through his transportive live performances.
Nosaj Thing is a kid from Pasadena who discovered g-funk and p-funk during his childhood, and messed around with cracked music production software and turntablism during his teens, all before taking a deep dive into Los Angeles’ mid-2000s noise and D.I.Y punk scenes. From there, he emerged with a sound equally informed by expansive ambient electronica, late 90s beat collage music, the rhythms of west coast urban radio, and traces of his mother’s great musical love – classical piano.
“We feel very fortunate to have a hand-picked selection of new talents to join the Red Bull Music platform as well as some old favourites of ours for what will be a mad showcase of local and international talent.” – MADCAP
