Breaking Artist (February 2021)

Written by on February 4, 2021

‘Breaking Artists’ on Base is a monthly feature where we pick 3 local artists and showcase 3 new tracks we think you should know. All ‘Breaking Artists’ tracks are fresh and featured for the entire month so we can push their music far and wide.

This month’s picks…

Arjuna Oakes and Serebii – ‘Reset’

Produced, written, and performed by Arjuna Oakes and Serebii, otherwise known as Callum Mower, their latest collab hits you right in all the right places. Lush textures, mellow synth pads, and an undulating bassline weave a vision of hazy summer, while Serebii‘s meticulous beat production grabs the whole arrangement and glues it all into a laid-back, stank-face-inducing groove. Serebii and Arjuna both contribute a dual vocal line that languidly dances along the surface of the groove, inviting the listener to turn the lights down and immerse themselves in the present moment.

Estere – ‘Animal Pleasure’

Animal Pleasure focuses on the archetype of sexuality, through a portrayal of lust and desire. Estère depicts herself as unabashedly on the hunt for some consensual satisfaction, a “pleasure high to remind you you’re alive” as she sings it. Estère says, “This song is about recognizing my own instinct as a female, human, ANIMAL and acting upon it without fear or shame.” The playful mood of the track is conveyed through a sparse, hook-driven guitar line that interweaves with infectious rhythm as well as Estère’s seductive vocals. Animal Pleasure is the third single from Estère’s upcoming and highly-anticipated third album, Archetypes, to be released on 22 January 2021 through all streaming platforms and on vinyl through Blue Riot Records, in New Zealand.
