Base FM has put on parties in bars, in clubs, in parks, and even on a boat… This summer we’ll be doing something different and throwing parties on a rooftop in downtown Auckland, Sunday Sessions style. Base FM brings you the fourth episode of our Rooftop Series: Back to Basics, a throwback to the golden era of hip hop / soul & beats.

BEAU JEFFRIES

An Emcee, Producer, Vocalist and Engineer who has graced the stage with some of the best Musicians and DJ’s in New Zealand and the world.

He’s played Rhythm and Vines, Phat, Toast Martinborough, Catlins River Fest and main-stage at La De Da, He’s supported Hip Hop heavy weights De La Soul, Babu and Rakaa, Roots Manuva and Opened for Pharoahe Monch.

Although considered a Hip Hop Emcee first and foremost. Beau’s equally at home over various genres outside of Hip Hop. You may have seen him supporting Lee Scratch Perry, Katchafire, Kora, Tiki, Ladi 6 and Shapeshifter or performing on stage as Emcee of choice for legends like Nero, Black Sun Empire, The Upbeats, Trei, Klute and Andy C to name a few.

Humble beginnings as a battle Emcee garnering various titles, his extensive touring of New Zealand’s clubs and festivals and versatility combine to make Beau Jeffries a unique talent with unrivaled stage presence and an insightful message.

KIRK JAMES

The proud father of 2 beautiful daughters, Kirk is an aspiring Artist / Musician and a certified Vinyl Junkie and is best described with this quote: “Music is my sanctuary, Music is life”

After being involved in other stations around Auckland, Kirk found his musical home when he settled in at Base FM fulltime. With an open ear to many musical styles, you’ll hear a selection of Soul, Funk, Jazz, Rhythm & Blues, Hip Hop, 80’s classics, Breakbeat, Reggae and anything with a killer bassline. “I try to keep the show interesting for myself and most importantly for the listeners”.

“Getting my music out there is what I love to do”. With this in mind, Kirk has played various bars / clubs including Galatos, Verona, Tabac, Rakinos, Britomart Country Club, Barrio, Sale Street and Racket, aswell as the occasional party & other functions.

SHARED SOUL (FLEX & JEWELS)

Born on a kiwi fruit orchard in Riwaka, Flex aka Steezie Wonder lives and breathes music. Playing Bass since he was a kid and DJing almost 2 decades, music has taken him around the world. Flex’s radio experience includes RDU, Radio Active, Geroge, Base, KFM and Radio Ponsonby.

Hailing from Bali, Indonesia Jewels is the voice of the duo and has a serious passion for Soul Music. Former vocalist of local Jazz / Fusion band Touch she is currently working on material for her debut solo EP and has collabs in the works with local heavyweights Audit and K-Lab.

The two and have recently performed together at Massive Equinox (Chch), Verona Cafe, Raglan Sunday Sessions and an impromptu cameo at Splore.

DJ SCIZZORHANDS

DJ Scizzorhands has been DJing since he was 18 and has already made it to Redbull Thre3style World Champs. When he joined ‘Peace Of Dreams’ with co host/DJ Richie Mills it marked his first time blessing the air waves on a weekly basis.

He plays a range of different HipHop and the odd Track pre 80’s – usually the original tracks that were Sampled for HipHop tracks… When DJing a gig he plays alot of Old Skool Hip Hop and anthems with the odd obscure oldie so expect some of that to creep in to the mix from time to time.

IAN ‘BEATMASTER’ WRIGHT

The current host of Base FM’s Friday drive show, a Promoter and Radio presenter he has been DJing for over 16 years. Originally from the south of England, he was then based in the Midlands for 10 years where he became part of the ‘Off The Hook’ Sound System. In 2012 Beatmaster relocated to Auckland, New Zealand.

After Djing and pumping big beats, breaks and hip hop into UK. club nights such as; ‘Good Bye Cruel World’ and the out-standing ‘BUSH’ club nights, Beatmaster became a part of the now legendary ‘Off The Hook’ club night. This brought the best in live funk and hip hop to Derby, UK. Beatmaster supported; Souls Of Mischief, Ugly Duckling, People Under The Stairs … but to name a few.

BeatMaster now carries on this Hip Hop legacy with the bastard son of ‘Off The Hook’ the ILL BEHAVIOUR Radio Show, where he plays a mix of uptempo Hip Hop, Nu Funk Breaks & Mash Up’s.

Over the years Beatmaster has performed with, and supported, some of the best DJ’s in the world including; Andy Smith, DJ skully, Mr Thing, DJ Noize, First Rate, and 3x DMC World Team Champs C2C and many more.
‘Friday Drive’ on Base FM. Friday’s 4pm-6pm.

THE LOCATION
The Rydges Hotel rooftop terrace has a stunning panoramic view of the Waitemata Harbour. Usually reserved for weddings and exclusive events, this is a rare chance to enjoy this amazing space in the heart of Auckland City.
