This week’s Local eyes video is the debut single from solo artist ARIA who has employed another, like-minded, fearless creator – acclaimed actress Morgana O’Reilly (Housebound, Silo Theatre,
Edinburgh & New York Fringe Festivals) to produce a raw and powerfully defenceless filmic capture of the story behind the song.
The video for ‘Awake With You’ is Morgana’s debut in the music video world is a percussive dream. Like the song itself, the video explores the longing and turmoil that comes when a love affair is over- it lives on in the quiet moments, as flashes of memory, desire and eventually liberation.
ARIA fostered her talent for singing, dancing and performing from a young age and into her womanhood via the Auckland Uni Music School and the New Zealand Opera Chorus. A driven and unique artist, ARIA has honed her superpowers by adapting and diversifying; whether it was writing and recording the Auckland anthem ‘Friday’, in the shack with Homebrew, belting top Cs in the Festival Garden for Dr Colossus, crooning BVs for Teeks on RNZ or providing vocals to Noah Slee at Berlin Red Bull studios; ARIA has lapped it all up, slowly harvesting her rich experiences into a juicy, patchwork quilt.
After spending three years in Berlin, soaking up the dance-floor dysphoria, ARIA is excited to be home and channelling the eclectic, artistic influences she has gathered into a personal and vulnerable body of work. A collaborative musician at heart, ARIA is working alongside local producers including Abraham Kunin (Teeks, Home Brew) and Haz Beats (Home Brew, Team Dynamite). Her debut single ‘Awake With You’ is a high energy, pop-soul collaboration with renowned electronic producer and NZ Music Awards nominee, Boycrush, whose illustrious drumming career (Lawrence Arabia, Ruby Suns) is evidenced by the driving drums in the tune. The new single’s industrial-electronic feel, reminiscent of Robyn’s synth-pop sound, is counterbalanced with tender vocals and vivid lyrics circling love, loss and desire.
