Welcome to our weekly feature where we round up our favourite articles/videos/music from around the internet this week and let you know our picks for things happening in the city this weekend:

 

We’re still finding it hard to feel bad for our Wellington friends after getting the news that the Common & Talib Kweli show has been moved to Auckland. 

In our first Base Guide To Everything we included a link to a bunch of great documentaries you can watch on Youtube. Dazed Magazine have found 5 other cult documentaries on Youtube, ranging from 1986’s Streetwise to 1993’s Flyin’ Cut Sleeves about New York gangs.

But if you don’t have time for a full length documentary but still want to watch something weird on Youtube, here’s a Japanese invented robotic tongue licking anime characters.

One of the most striking elements of the visual album Beyoncé just casually dropped on us this week, were the poems she recites between songs. Those poems come from Kenyan-born Somali poet Warsan Shire and you can listen to her soothing sing-song voice reading her poetry over on her bandcamp. 

Erykah Badu has been putting out some interesting stuff lately, her most recent offering a remix/cover of young up-and-coming rapper Wintertime’s 2015 gem “Thru It All” which she turns into a 420 tribute.

One of the most moving pieces of music we heard this week was D’Angelo’s cover of Sometimes It Snows In April. The tribute to Prince from one of his biggest fans is almost overwhelmingly heartfelt so make sure you’ve got the tissues nearby.

If you need cheering up after that then this collection of 24 Outrageous Prince Stories pulled together by Vulture two years ago should hit the spot.

Photographer Yannick Anton shares photos from Yes Yes Y’all, the LBGTQ bashment that’s been going for 7 years now.

This story inside NASA’s plans to send humans to Mars is an interesting read.

It’s been 35 years since Alien was released and as Alien Day (4/26) was this week, here’s a handy guide to how the classic movie affected pop culture.

Tonight reggae legend and dancehall godfather Johnny Osbourne is performing at Neck Of The Woods with Federation Sound’s Max Glazer. Johnny dropped by the studio this morning to chat with Dylan and Oren and got us even more hype for the show.

And of course it wouldn’t be a true dancehall event if there wasn’t a soundclash going down. Just down the road at Golden Dawn, Ras Stone is hosting an Afro Delight party with Wellington’s Audio Mechanics, along with Francois Byamana Judah, DJ Muse and DJ Grassroots.

One of favourite shows to listen to at Base (when we’re not listening to our own DJs of course) is Joe Kay’s Soulection show. On Saturday night Red Bull Sound Select is bringing Joe Kay and Esta, another crucial Soulection player, to Auckland.  Alongside these two is a great local line up made up of some of favourite beatmakers. Those $3 RSVPs are still available but get in there quick and remember, even with an RSVP it’s still first in first served.

Make sure you drink plenty of water on Saturday night because K’ Rd’s first Open Streets Festival is happening from 12pm – 7pm. Karangahape Rd will be closed to cars all the way from Queen St to Ponsonby Rd, with live music, street food, free activities, art installations and pop up performances. Neck Of The Woods is running a stage in the middle of the street featuring live music from Latin Aotearoa and Soccer Practice, Brazilian dancers and DJs.

From K’ Rd you can wander down to Freemans Bay Community Centre for the NPH Latin American Market from 3pm – 7pm. Koha entry which goes to NPH, a non profit that takes care of abandoned and orphaned children in Latin America.
