EVENT: Matariki At The Waterfront (17th – 19th July)
Written by Admin on July 7, 2015
Matariki on the Waterfront is back for 2015 for its fourth year at Waterfront Auckland this July 17th, 18th and 19th. Matariki Festival is a month-long celebration, and as the largest indigenous celebration in the country, the final weekend on Auckland’s sparkling Waterfront is the perfect opportunity to come together in one of Auckland’s favourite spaces to share, connect and be entertained at the coming of the new year.
There’s a diverse, engaging array of activities and workshops on the cards at Matariki on the Waterfront. From an evening of sensory exploration on 17 July featuring a range of sound and light artists and running through a weekend of markets, performances, and workshops detailing New Zealand Māori practices and stories, the final weekend of Matariki celebrated at Auckland’s Waterfront is the ideal culmination to a magnificent festival, celebrating the mid-Winter Seven Sisters constellation twinkling low in the north-east sky.
FRIDAY 17th July: Art And Sound @ Silo (5pm-late)
Light- and projection-based artists will collectively transform the Silo Park space with moving image and light from 5pm until late. Meanwhile, traditional Māori art activities will take place within Silo 6 and food trucks, and the red container bar will keep things buzzing.
Music: Dylan C and Gene Rivers (Māori HiFi)
SATURDAY 18th July: Mighty Matariki Markets (midday-5pm)
More than 50 stallholders from around the area will be on-site in Silo Park to display and trade their traditional and modern handcrafts and items, with a focus on Māori traders and their goods. Learn about the sacred history of pounamu, swap your decorative household lillies for harakeke and sample classic Māori fare alongside the Silo Markets staples.
The largest indigenous celebration in the country is the perfect opportunity to present the largest Silo Markets the city has ever seen: The Mighty Matariki Markets.
Music: DJs Kina Cuts and Lo Key (Māori HiFi)
SUNDAY 19th July: Silo Sessions for Matariki (midday-5pm)
A diverse and powerful line-up of local Māori hitmakers, music legends and talented young performers will grace the Silo Sessions stage for an afternoon of sunshine and song.
Line up includes:
• Kiwi music legends Trinity Roots
• The X Factor NZ 2015 winner Beau Monga
• Young Māori music collective Pao Pao Pao
• Grantis from Māori HiFi
Matariki on the Waterfront is a chance to recognise and acknowledge New Zealand’s most significant indigenous celebration in Auckland’s urban waterfront location, Silo Park, complete with awesome entertainment, food, art and craft offerings.
