Auckland-born, now LA-based MARK de CLIVE-LOWE is an underground phenomenon. The avant-garde soulful Pianist/DJ/Producer has been on the cutting edge of club based jazz music for the past 15 years; creating on stage from scratch, using drum machines, keyboards and effects.

He has been one of the key musicians in the broken beat and nu jazz movements, blending jazz, ethnic music and urban grooves into a 21st-century sound. He has been involved with over 150 releases, collaborating with as diverse a range of artists as Lauryn Hill, Jody Watley, Sy Smith, Omar & Pino Palladino (D’Angelo/The Who).

This week will see MdCL return home for a brief visit to promote his latest album ‘Church’. Details for the Church Listening Party @ Conch Records, Thursday 22nd May can be found here.

“The Ghaziya (also Arabic for ‘conqueror’) was an Egyptian dancer of the Nawari people banned in the 19th century and whose style later evolved into western forms of belly dance. This composition was always an exotic and mystical sounding melody built on a dancefloor sensibility. The name seems to really embody the intention of the composition. As with many of the instrumental tracks on the album, musically it’s about transposing the traditional idea of a jazz quintet to a contemporary setting, exploring the textures and styles that electronics can bring to the music while keeping the soulfulness, spirit and FUN of what we’re playing!” –
