Base FM – 100% DJ’s Choice

When Base FM began broadcasting in May 2004 on low power FM frequency, the aim was to bring underground music to Auckland’s inner city fringe suburbs.

In May 2008 Base FM became completely independent from any network or other radio station, and within 6 months had launched nationwide on Freeview Channel 71,  an amazing opportunity that allowed the station to engage with a much larger audience. While Freeview offers exceptional HD sound quality at home, Base FM also recognized the importance of mobile technology. Online streaming and their own Base FM mobile app have made the station accessible worldwide to anyone with a smartphone or internet connection. Base FM anywhere, anytime – without ever having to sacrifice it’s sound or it’s format.

Going digital means equal rights for us broadcasters. It’s not about being part of a big network with great financial backing, it’s about having the same reach geographically and allowing people to decide what they want to listen to rather than being limited to what they can get,” says Jazz, Base FM Managing Director.

Today, Base FM is still 100% DJ’s choice and strongly believes in it’s No Playlist and No Commercial Bullshit policy.

With 56 weekly shows and over 80 DJs on the roster, Base FM has always been about the people behind the turntables: a passionate community who use this unique platform to express themselves and pass on their musical knowledge. There is no set playlist, instead giving the DJs 100% control over what is played on the station. This freedom ensures the music selections are always fresh and dynamic and not controlled by major labels but personal taste. That station and its DJs have supported underground music for 13 years now and continue to push the best in local and international reggae, dancehall, dubstep, d&b, experimental electronic beats, hip-hop, boogie, jazz, funk, and soul.
