This Day in Music History 21/01

Written by on January 21, 2021

Starting off with the obligatory birthday shout-outs, sending out a big happy birthday to Jam Master Jay (Run-DMC) would have turned 56  and Emma Lee Bunton (Spice Girls) 1976 who turns 45.

On this day in 1982, B.B. King donated his entire record collection to the University of Mississippi’s Center for the Study of Southern Culture. The UM’s Blues Archive is one of the world’s largest public collections of blues recordings, publications, and memorabilia. The collection included about 20,000 rare blues records, along with foreign language books that he would study to learn common phrases in order to speak to audiences when he would tour around the world & 7,000 discs King aired as a disc jockey at Memphis radio station WDIA in the ’50s. This is where he was given the nickname “Beale Street Blues Boy”, later shortened to “Blues Boy”, and finally to B.B.
