On this weeks Native Tongues, we check out some brand new albums and mixtapes from artists JARNA, Diggy Dupé, JessB, Louis Ross and more…
Kicking off the show is conscious and indigenous Hip Hop artist Rush Wepia, with the track ‘Greatness’ featuring DJ Spell off his mixtape ‘IndiGenius’ which was released in 2019. If you haven’t heard his mixtape, we suggest you listen to the whole thing here:
Next up is MC Roar tha master with his homegrown track ‘Party with the Roar’. Born and raised in Avondale, Roar tha master comes with a flow of uniqueness and dynamic wordplay set to make waves by the end of 2020/2021…

Wellington Hip Hop artist ABRZY has dropped his new project titled ’80 Different Ways’. On the show we featured ‘Gully Boy’ and ‘Thief Of The Night’.
“It wasn’t until my final year of school where I finally found a circle of life long friends that I had the confidence to share my gift with the world. It was the support from people around me that gave me the courage to spit bars to someone other than my own reflection. That is when ABRZY Rahman was born.
Released my first album in the summer 2011 but due to the near impossible task of managing both university life and rap, I went on hiatus till I finished my degree. A sort of sabbatical if you will. Music, this game, will never work unless you put 100% and then some into it.”

Diggy Dupé showcases his dexterity as a rapper with the release of his full length debut ‘That’s Me, That’s Team’. Featuring collaborations with some of the biggest names on the local scene and telling stories of his life as a young Niuean man in Central Auckland and his connection to the local hip hop community, this album realises the promise shown in his EPs Island Time and K.O.T.I.C.
He celebrates the release with a video for ‘Hype’, by animators Anita Ward, Mitch Smyth and Luke Toth and produced by Blaine Stevenson.
“It’s tongue in cheek, focusing on consumer culture and how we tend to try and keep up with current trends even though we can’t support the habit financially,” the rapper comments on ‘Hype’.
Diggy Dupé likens the songs on the album to players on a team roster, saying that each song is different, providing listeners with a range of perspectives and energies.
Louis Ross is a 24 year old Producer/DJ from Tauranga. His specialty as a DJ is House and DnB but can mix nearly anything.
Producing started almost a year ago with his first successful song ‘That Funky Kinda beat’ which led to a few opportunities. His genres of music consists of House, Tropical House, Hip-Hop/RnB and DnB. He can also sing and play the guitar and drums.
On the show we played a few of his earlier tracks ‘Crate Day’ and ‘Holiday feat. Sunshine Ted‘ to get a feel for his style and then we were treated to an exclusive listen of ‘Cool Cat feat. Will McClean‘ which drops on Friday 4th September.

No stranger to the Base FM airwaves is JARNA, this time with her debut mixtape titled “memoirs for the brokenhearted”.
Produced by super producer EDY, this tape is made for those who enjoy luscious harmonies and are going through heartache. Freshly on the R&B scene and on the rise she’s already worked with artists Mikey Mayz, Chris Bates, bKIDD and Sam V.
Last but not least, Auckland-based MC, JessB has unveiled her 3 Nights In Amsterdam mixtape which was recorded on a trip to Amsterdam in 2019 and features a fusion of Dancehall, Reggaeton, Garage and Electronic influences.
As one of New Zealand’s brightest exports, the six-track collection propels JessB’s rising status even higher as she masters new sonic landscapes and styles, pulling from dancehall, reggaeton, garage and electronic influences amid her trademark sass-leaning rhymes and hip-hop flavour.
As previewed via an accompanying video earlier this week, “Bullseye” opens the mixtape to plucked notes over a sped-up reggaeton-style rhythm. “Do your dance, if you know you something”, is the invitational line from JessB between fast-paced and fiery verses.
