Featured Base DJ – Zane:Tee
Written by Admin on September 11, 2012
From the Mixed Bizness crew we have Zane:Tee as our Featured Base DJ this week!
Zane first got turntables and records 16 odd years ago when he says he was into “embarrassing as rave music”. He soon got over that scene and sold them. Zane says he missed mixing so bought some more and amassed a good collection only to get his house robbed! About 4 years ago he bought some more and he’s keeping them the rest of his life “even if I just play with them at home by myself when I’m 60”.
As well as DJing here at Base and different spots around town, Zane is one of the guys behind GrapeVinyl.
GrapeVinyl started nearly 3 years ago as Zane’s side project from DJing in bars. The good people at our home away from home, Leigh Sawmill approached him and asked if he wanted to put on a night there. He got together some DJs, called the night Sawmill Selaktaz and the party went off.
Things kept building from there to now where they’ve sold out 8 of the last 12 events and had, in Zane’s words, some epic fun times. The name GrapeVinyl came about in the long term view of one day putting on proper music events in vineyards and other unique places with their ‘grapevine’ of vinyl collecting mates, which is what they are doing now, with a live twist.
Musically, GrapeVinyl tries to keep a unique sound to other event brands, the same as what Zane DJs himself. Party good time vibes, funky, positive and organic, across any genre.
Zane told us there are about 30 people involved with the GrapeVinyl family. A mixture of friends, loyal supporters and DJs alike. It’s a tough market to be in and without them Zane, who said he can’t thank them enough, admited the events would never work.
You can go get a taste of GrapeVinyl this Saturday at the Ascension Wine Estate for the GrapeVinyl End Of Winter Ball. Great line up, an excuse to get all flash and dressed up, and supper is included!
Zane has a vinyl-only residency every Sunday at BCC, as well as regular slots at Neighbourhood, Macs Takapuna, Ponsonby Social Club, Toro, Snapdragon, The Commons, Ginger Minx, Revelry.
Catch Zane:Tee here on Base every Wednesday from 12 – 2pm for the Mixed Bizness show with his bros Luke King and Johnny Lowe.
If you can’t wait till next week, you can listen to one of Zane’s shows on his Soundcloud page.
