MANUEL BUNDY
Manuel is part of the DJ trio known for the long-running monthly club night The Turnaround (which kicked off in 2003), alongside DJs Cian and The Submariner. Wherever you find Manuel spinning, there’s bound to excellent selections across multiple genres, smoothly mixed to perfection, because that’s how Manny Styles rolls.
Widely regarded as Auckland’s pre-eminent soul and hip-hop DJ, Manuel Bundy could be called the godfather of the scene. Indeed, In 1998, Che Fu told Pavement magazine, “Manuel has been at the forefront of [NZ] hip-hop from day one and without his influence, I don’t think I’d be doing what I’m doing now.”
Check out Manuel Bundy on the Base FM airwaves for his show ‘Down N Out’ Thursdays 12-2pm.
SUBMARINER
Andy Morton aka Submariner first began making music with his secondary school mate Zane Lowe, producing beats on a four-track recorder. He then studied audio at SAE (School of Audio Engineering) alongside Chris Sinclair, who topped the class – so Morton decided Sinclair was the one to beat. His role as a beatmaker and producer for local hip-hop has been a vital element in developing the artform in Aotearoa.
He also made a name for himself as a DJ, playing regularly as part of the monthly night The Turnaround alongside Manuel Bundy and Cian (he and Manuel Bundy collaborated as Combinations on a few tracks). He has also remixed tracks for Fat Freddy’s Drop, Recloose, Mark de Clive-Lowe, Salmonella Dub, Bic Runga, Rhombus and more.
CIAN
Originally from England Cian O’Donnell has been DJing since 1989 in various spots around the globe. Due to working in record shops since leaving school Cians sound covers a wide variety of musical genres. A typical 3 hour set can take in dub/reggae, hip hop, downtempo beats, latin/Brazilian, broken beats, funk, soul and dancefloor jazz — depending to whom and where he’s playing.
He set up Conch Records with Brent Hollands, a record store specializing in independent hip-hop, Jamaican 7’s, European electronica, house, soul, funk, jazz etc.
THE LOCATION
The Rydges Hotel rooftop terrace has a stunning panoramic view of the Waitemata Harbour. Usually reserved for weddings and exclusive events, this is a rare chance to enjoy this amazing space in the heart of Auckland City.
