Featured Base DJ – AD.1

Written by on December 4, 2012

Our Featured Base FM DJ this week has DJ’d all over town, at almost every community radio station in the city but Base FM is his real home.

We’ve recently poached AD.1, aka Morgan Hammond back after a brief sojourn and you can now catch him here every Monday morning from 10 AM till midday for his show, Down For The Count. The show spans everything from Jazz to Soul to Latin to Afrobeat to Downbeat to Hip Hop but also highlights Morgans appreciation of newer producers, beat makers and artists such as Tall Black Guy, Tensei and Herma Puma.

Prior to 2003 AD.1’s DJing experience boiled down to having a few turns on different friends’ turntables and purchasing a couple of records. He’d always been surrounded by friends who DJ’d and has always loved music so it was inevitable that in 2003 he would finally start playing friends’ parties and a couple of weddings which of course lead to a serious digging obsession.

Morgan’s ecclectic music taste has grown out of listening to hiphop when he was younger as well as growing up skateboarding and being a part of that culture and it’s diverse sound. Of course the DJ adds that friends and the people he’s looked up to have also influenced the range of artists and genres he listens to. And then there’s that old thing of discovering one thing that lead to another and another and then to wanting to know more.

As for other creative outlets, for a number of years Morgan has organised exhibitions and events while also exhibiting his own photography and prints. As for future projects, watch this space.

AD.1 has a whole heap of gigs coming up this week. Go see him do his thing live tonight (6/12/12) at Millers Coffee for First Thursdays, playing the opening slot from 8pm – 9pm at the Gold Barz Party at Biz Dojo’s Maker Space on both Friday and Saturday, and then on Sunday afternoon at Golden Dawn for a jazz set.

Check out his inspiration on his Crooked Crowns tumblr, keep updated on upcoming gigs on his Facebook page, follow him on Twitter and listen to his shows and mixes on Mixcloud.
