Over the last while, a new movement in the UK bass music scene has been on the rise. Swept up in that movement are two life long friends, hailing from Auckland, New Zealand. Jay “Bulletproof”, and Chris “DuttyRanks” not only share a passion for Bass Music, but also Jazz, Funk, Soul, Reggae and Dub. BPDR is the crossroad where these passions collide. Meeting in Christchurch in the 90’s, Jay and Chris became close friends and worked as a dj/mc duo around New Zealand for a number of years. Jay was known worldwide for his exploits in Drum & Bass production as Bulletproof, and was introduced to the jazzier more melodic side of 140bpm bass music by Chris in 2010 after taking a break from DnB production.

Since then BPDR have been in the studio putting their branding on a sound that was created and pioneered by names like Mala, Silkie, Swindle, Quest and Joker and perpetuated by names like L-Wiz and Von D. Their music made its way into the crates of all of these names, and many more UK and US based DJ’s and producers. 2013 Saw BPDR collaborating with Silkie and Quest, and 2014 has already seen them in the studio with the funkster himself, Swindle. Both these collaborations feature on the new BPDR album titled “BassJazz Volume One” released 29th April.

UK/US bass music has witnessed a major shift in the last 12 months with a massive influx of listeners looking to emerging musical styles and genres to take over from the distorted grungy side of yesteryears 140bpm bass music. With an album encompassing this musical shift already completed It makes sense that BPDR are now adapting Bassjazz Volume One into a live show Incorporating the jazz flavoured vibe captured in their music, and re-moulding it into a sub heavy, live experience. So instead of two guys standing on stage playing music, BPDR will be incorporating some of New Zealands finest musical talent taking their sound to another level, with a heavy emphasis on drums, bass and subs, but more importantly, a Jazz party vibe and atmosphere.

BPDR ‘Bassjazz Volume One‘ available on iTunes.
